Horii Shichimeien — Guardians of Uji’s Tea Legacy

Established in 1879, Horii Shichimeien carries forward a proud legacy of crafting premium Uji tea. Nestled in Kyoto’s Yamashiro region, between the serene Uji and Kizu rivers, the company sources only the finest tea leaves from this storied land—long revered as the heart of Japanese tea cultivation. Horii Shichimeien holds a rare and honorable distinction: a direct connection to the “Uji Shichimeien”, the Seven Famous Tea Gardens designated by the Ashikaga Shogunate during the Muromachi period. Today, it stands as the sole active caretaker of one of those legendary gardens—Okunoyama—faithfully maintaining its cultivation to this day. More than just tea producers, Horii Shichimeien are stewards of tradition. With deep roots as both growers and artisans, they remain committed to preserving the heritage of Uji tea while continuing to share its refined elegance with tea enthusiasts around the world.
